CARE N SHARE A PTA PROGRAM AT ARROYO VISTA SCHOOL Program Overview
Care N Share is a PTA program at Arroyo Vista School that began 15 years ago. On a designated day each month, our students and their families voluntarily bring in non-perishable food items and toiletries to be donated to people who are in need of food in Orange County. Orange County is one of the most affluent in the country, yet we have many families who are not able to provide three meals a day for their children. It is estimated that there are approximately 35,000 homeless people in Orange County, and 70% of these people are families with children. Last year we collected over 6,000 pounds of food, which was enough to provide over 12,000 meals! Not only are we helping our community, we are providing an opportunity for our students to be aware of the needs of others and a chance to make a difference.
The Care N Share program is facilitated by a volunteer group of parents from Arroyo Vista who designate collection dates at the beginning of the school year. ASB Students from the Middle School assist them.
On collection day, the parent volunteers and student helpers stand outside the school with shopping carts to accept the donations from the student body. Due to the overwhelming amount and the most generous giving of our student body, an agency comes to the school to collect the items that were donated on that same morning. They weigh it for us and then distribute the items to the needy of Orange County on our behalf.
Our goal with the Care N Share at Arroyo Vista is to continue to increase the awareness of the needs of our neighbors in our county. Last year we assisted the Tesoro Community Connection of schools by providing additional baby items to Fr. Serra’s Pantry. In addition, we were able to make two additional collections and donations for them because of our long time established program. We are proud to provide a service opportunity for our students and helping those in need in our community.
